Tracing the Ukraine war’s economic effects on Kosovo
A macroeconomic assessment for UNDP Kosovo examined how the war in Ukraine affected prices, public finances and household vulnerability. It traced direct and indirect channels through energy, food, remittances, consumption and trade, linking evidence to fiscal, social-protection and market-response options.
Context and purpose
UNDP Kosovo’s assessment examined how the war in Ukraine transmitted economic shocks through food, energy, trade and remittances. Its purpose was to distinguish observed pressures from prospective risks and identify fiscal, social-protection and market responses.
The work
Data collection covered prices, trade balances, public costs and revenues, assistance and household consumption. A shared evidence repository supported the analytical team. Fiscal-space analysis and donor discussions connected targeted protection and affordability with wider economic stabilisation in the Western Balkans.
Outputs and use
The co-authored impact report and its launch presented evidence and policy recommendations on stabilisation, social protection and market measures. The findings supported discussion of response options without assuming that all recommendations were adopted.
