Agriculture / agro-food value chains
Agro-food investment feasibility across Afghanistan and Central Asia
A multi-country feasibility study for UNDP examined agro-food opportunities in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It connected comparative advantage, production conditions and market demand with investment prospects, providing an analytical basis for agricultural development priorities and dialogue between national governments and development partners.
Context and purpose
UNDP’s agro-food feasibility study examined investment opportunities in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Its purpose was to identify promising agricultural and processed products while accounting for production conditions, market access and the development priorities of each country.
The work
Value-chain analysis compared comparative advantage, production methods, demand and investment potential. Economic inputs considered processing opportunities, affordability and dietary diversity. Dialogue with national counterparts and development partners placed the findings alongside existing plans and donor programmes.
Outputs and use
The feasibility analysis identified products and value chains for further development. Findings supported government and development-partner discussions about agricultural investment and programming priorities, without implying that the opportunities had already been financed.
